Microsoft 365 for Windows: License Error Fix

Due to compatibility issues, some versions of Outlook 365 for Windows will not connect to Microsoft 365 or may display a licensing error when attempting to connect. If this issue is experienced, the following process is a common solution.

  1. In a new/unauthenticated browser session, go to portal.office.com and login with your CNetID@uchicago.edu account.
  2. Once logged in, on the right hand side, select Install Apps > Microsoft 365 apps.
  3. Download and install apps.
  4. Open Word and select the Account tab in the left pane.
  5. Register the Office product with your CNetID@uchicago.edu account.
    • This will activate your Microsoft 365 license on all Microsoft 365 apps.
  6. Open Outlook.
  7. Replace your CNetID@uchicago.edu account with your @ChicagoBooth.edu email address.
    • If you receive a MDM (Mobile Device Management) error, it can be ignored & closed. Booth does not use Microsoft 365 MDM.
  8. Outlook 365 should now begin loading your Booth email profile.
    • If auto-configure fails and you are prompted for an IMAP or other connection, please go back and reattempt auto-configure. If this still fails, you may need to exit Outlook and start over.

Additional recommendations to address known issues include:

  • We have seen several issues with the default Outlook edition (New) on many new laptops. If presented with an option to "Try the new Outlook", please decline as this is not a full enterprise version of Outlook; it is an updated version of the older legacy Microsoft Mail app.
